Learn More About Paul Begue, our Newest Team Member

1. Where are you from?
Born in New Orleans and grew up on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain in a town called Mandeville.

2. What is your college background?
I left Louisiana in 2004 to play college soccer at UNC-Charlotte. While at Charlotte I captained the men’s soccer team and received a BS in Psychology and a BA in Sociology. After my time in Charlotte, I moved to a mountain town in Western North Carolina called Asheville. While in Asheville, I worked at the local university, UNC-Asheville as a technician in the biology departments aquatic vivarium and volunteered as an assistant coach on the men’s soccer team. I fell in love with the work I was doing in the aquatic vivarium and I started taking classes that would help me pursue an advanced degree in fisheries. In 2012, I moved to Raleigh North Carolina and took a job as a technician in an aquatic weeds lab at North Carolina State University (they needed someone who could trailer, launch, and operate a bay boat). My boating experience then landed me an additional technician position in the fisheries department at NC State. In addition to my responsibilities with the aquatic weeds team, I was working with fish! Shocking, tagging, telemetry, hook and line, and aquaculture! I was living the dream and finally realized that pursuing an advanced degree in recirculating aquaculture was for me. I completed a Masters degree in Applied Ecology (concentration in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) in 2015. Whew!

3. What drew your interest to this job/working for this company?
Enterprise Aquatics embodies nearly every positive experience I had working within the aquatics/fish world. I love working with fish, aquatic plants, and most of all helping people manage their aquatic environments, be it an aesthetic pond, fishing pond, recirculating aquaculture, or aquaponics system. I have also worked with Ken, Rob and Diane for years and have developed a great relationship with them. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to work with great people doing something that I love to do!

4. Did you have any related experience that could help you on the job?
I have years of experience with operating heavy machinery, boats, hauling live fish, pond/lake fish stocking, electrofishing (both backpack and boat), fish tagging, telemetry, sonar, aquatic weed application, recirculating aquaculture and aquaponics  system design, fabrication, installation, integration, operation, consulting, and sales. I have been officially working with fish for 11 years but, as a south Louisiana native, I have been working with fish and the natural world since I was old enough to walk.

5. Were you more excited to gain field experience with pond management or aquaponics?
Both! I have years of experience doing both so I am excited to help in any way that Enterprise Aquatics clients need me.

6. What are some of your hobbies?
My beautiful wife, Amanda, and I have 2 great kids (5 year old son, Benjamin, and 2 ½ year old daughter, Eugenie) so I do tons of kid related and family oriented stuff! We go to the zoo, aquarium, and insectarium all the time. My son wants to be a spider monkey and my daughter wants to be a fairy. Personally, I used to play competitive soccer in New Orleans but have recently retired. I fish recreationally as often as possible, kayak, travel, spend time with friends and family, and have recently taken up golf (due to my retirement from soccer after 32 years). I love art, food, and parties with live music. Hopefully we get back to those things soon!

7. Have you lived anywhere outside of Louisiana?
I lived in North Carolina for 12 years. I met my wife there and brought her back to Louisiana in 2016. I live in New Orleans and have planted deep roots here.

8. Favorite movies?
My all time favorite movie is Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. I’m a big Sci-Fi fan also, so Star Wars (in all forms), Aliens, Predator (Schwarzenegger), The Road Warrior, Mad Max Fury Road…The list goes on. I love movies!

9. Any other fun facts about yourself or cool stories?
I can’t burp no matter how hard I try. I have the cure for hiccups. I’m a really good mimic and love to cut up so naturally I often make prank calls to friends and families. I always keep it clean and family friendly!
